Ok you guys thanks so much!. Yeah right now still trying to figure out how to get Poser to load my runtime. It's only detecting two sets by Xurge, but I know I've chosen the right runtime, I've checked five times now. grrrr so aggravated.

Unfortunately, you will have to rebuild the runtime in a folder structure that Poser can recognize and access.  DAZ set up studio from the beginning so that it can recognize and open Poser runtimes, but the runtimes it creates, even with poser-compatible items, cannot be seen by Poser because the folders are not named the same nor are they in the same directory tree structure.  As Suro already said, this is immensely tedious - but, once done, it is definitely worth the hassle.

Poser doesn't care how many runtimes you have, but every runtime you have must follow this structure of folder naming and hierarchy:

    Runtime
     - Geometries
     - Textures
     - Libraries
     -  - Camera
     -  - Face
     -  - Hair
     -  - Hand
     -  - Light
     -  - Materials
     -  - Pose
     -  - Props

If it's a figure of any kind (including conforming clothing), it goes under the "character" folder.  If it's a prop of any kind (I.E. it doesn't have a bone hierarchy), it goes under the "props" folder, and so on.  You can have any number of sub-folders beneath these folders in any arrangement you like, but Poser needs this root hierarchy and division of items to find stuff.

Ugh, wow this is turning in to a pain, but I understand now. I think I'm actually mentally kicking myself for never forcing myself to sit down and learn Poser from the get go cause that's what everyone was telling me to do. Now that I'm learning the main interface it actually makes more sense than the first go round, wonder why?

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction Xaa! So you're saying I'm going to essentially have two runtimes on my harddrive? If so I think I'll just say bye bye to Daz and rebuild my entire runtime for the poser format and just move it to poser's runtime.
  • Characters = .cr2 files.
    Props = .pp2 files
    poses = .pz2 files
    hands = .hd2 files
    cameras = .cm2 files
    hair props = .hr2 files
    Materials = .mt5 or mt6 files
    Face files = .fc2 files
    light files = .lt2 files.

So, characters are *anything* ending in .cr2.  Really, anything; don't care if it's a set or a person or an animal or a tank, it's something that is rigged. This flexibility is sort of why pose files can be either material pose or figure pose files.

  • In fact, back in the day, before poser .mt5 and.mt6 files and multiple runtimes, when we were overrun with materials poses, we'd change the extension on them to .cm2 and put them in Cameras. They still worked. I don't recommend doing this now; it's not necessary and it confuses matters.

  • Celtic: no, you don't need two runtimes. Once you optimize your runtimes for Poser (and while doing so organize and clean them), you can point Studio to these updated runtimes and everything will be fine. Keep installing studio content into the relevant folders, and you'll be set.

I have two folders, a "shadow" folder with subfolders with the same names as my runtimes for the zips and installers. And the actual content folder with subfolders containing my runtimes, thus:

Studio3 [the main content folder -- so named before I switched to Poser]
    - Animals
    - - Animals - Air
    - - - Runtime
Readmes and random stuff like templates

    - - Amimals - Fantasy
    - - - Runtime
Readmes and random stuff like templates
     etc

I unzip or install into the specific subfolder "Animals - Air" or "Amimals - Fantasy" (etc) and I have no problems.

How you break up your categories is up to you.

Someone might recommend a plugin or library manager, but I'm cheap and I'd rather buy content and do this myself.

If you mean "I'd have to have a DAZ runtime and a Poser runtime", the answer is maybe.  DAZ can read Poser runtimes (though it sometimes doesn't want to), but Poser can't read DAZ runtimes.

As for me, I have one main runtime which is now floating around three hundred gig, and smaller specialized runtimes for character development and other things.  With the current version of Poser I'm using (Poser Pro 2012), this is not an issue.  With the previous version I was using (Poser 7), my main runtime was getting too large for Poser7 to use - it took five minutes just for Poser to scan the runtime and build the access tables.  That's "click to open the program, then walk off because it won't do anything for five minutes", so, yeah, I needed to upgrade.  The newer version doesn't have this problem because it uses a different library system.

  • Studio really can read Poser runtimes, but it tends to add files to the folder above the "runtime" folder (or the folder containing the "runtime" folder) -- though not always -- for Studio-specific files.

This doesn't interfere with either program's reading of the runtimes (or with Carrara's reading of the runtimes, as far as I can tell).

Ok so I've spent the day going through my runtime to find out exactly why the only thing Poser is detecting is Xurge's stuff. Well the stuff that Poser detected is literally "treed" like this:

    D/S3
       Content
           Runtime
               Runtime
                   Libraries
                       Character

What. The. Heck? A runtime within my runtime is what Poser detected?

This has definitely been frustrating. But I think I now understand that the bazillion folders I had in my runtime are now unneeded, so I cleaned up over 30 gigs of space taken up by things that had installed wrong or were just plain screwy to begin with. Now, going to truly focus on rebuilding my runtime from scratch on my spare hard drive, and see if poser will detect that. Here's hoping. And thanks you guys once again for the info!
  • Hey, Celtic--looks like your folders have been multiplying without your say-so. Nasty little beasts. At least once you've re-organized you won't have to do it ALL over again.

  • woah, that one was fascinating, nanobot.

    update on domain:

we still don't have the primary back:(
we had 2 names for ten years. never
really used one hardly at all. decided
    to let it expire.

jumpine has held up letting go of
promary name 3 times, even with
    new host's techs manually trying!
    they reject their own code!

    we were getting desperate.

we bought back the name we let expire in feb.,
the secondary less used one, and it's on new host.
jumpline is just not letting us get back the one
    they are holding hostage :(

i was on phone with host gator, the new hosts,
who are the good guys, and they said they have
never ever seen an american registrar be so...
pick your own words... before! not pleased at all.

so... we either have to mirror our whole site
manually, use redirects, then buy back our
own primary domain name when and if
jumpship takes their grimy little talons off it
    this summer...

or, or... i have no clue. it's 3 AM, so...

i so need to talk to a techy person!

thanks to any and all praying for me. i have
at least not gotten so sick again.

and i'm proofread up to ch. 757...
    it never ends, lol.

greyed out adult content boxes and some odd japanese cartoony stuff. no clue what i was supposed to see...

oh, and hostgator is CALLING the old registar to see if they can fix the mess.
because we put in a report to ICANN and they will investigate...

    soon.

    yeah, i know. sigh.

  • nanobot, lol :) oh, well... here is what happened...

we already reported you to ICANN...

oh? well, let me check... that's odd. i don't see any sort of block or
hold on that domain name. Looks to me like it's free to leave. have your
    new host call us...

    result:

they did it as a, 'push'. no, i'm not googling it. apparently it's like a
cross between a yiddish, give it a vorf already, oy! and pushing some
    buttons...

hostgator got it! but they had to get it to a special secret decoder
spot in the middle of the night... then they began to set it up so
it actually goes with our domain, you know, the piddly stuff like the
    files, no biggie...

now it just has to, 'resolve'...

at this rate the primary elections of all 50 states will end first!

but... now it's ours... they say. i'm still holding my breath until
    i see proof...

but, hopefully their, 'soon', will be less time than the other beloved
version of that 4 letter word ;)

    i still want artzone back!

  • Thanks guys, :) The initial "Holy cow! Some one just died!" has worn off. I hope the family is ok, They hadn't gotten there when I left. Truth be told, it may have been my first, but it won't be the last; part of the job. Funny thing, I thought I'd freeze up when it happened the first time, but I'm happy and proud to say I didn't. I remembered everything I had to do. But anyway, sadly enough, these things do happen. I think I would have been more upset if it had been a child.... But that's just me.

Bed and tea were had, now to be productive! :D

    How's everyone?

*edit* Ok, so someone dying is upsetting no matter what, sorry, didn't mean to sound callous by saying a child would have upset me more, heh.
  • Glad to hear that you'll be adjusting. Deaths are a part of your job but I don't think anyone with a heart simply walks away unaffected from the first one. I also think most would be more upset at a child than an adult. Especially if the adult was elderly.
