Reading about the Hollerith machine and early tabulators--fascinating!  Started with the 1890 U.S. Census.

Vue does this thing with its "ecosystem painter" brush where you can basically paint dimensional plant figures onto any surface. It's how you make ivy and other vines cover buildings and such. It's a little silly sometimes--you could paint big trees onto Vickie if you wanted to. So, someone painted a grassy garden onto a wall...essentially. Pretty cool.

Relaxing is what my knees think is best. Poor things have to deal with a congenital deformation of the bones that are supposed to hold them in place and the whole arrangement turned 50 on Monday.
Meanwhile, I'm TIRED. Put in a 11 hour day today to reduce the amount of my job that the person who will be filling in for me has to do. This is the down side to being the only person who knows WTF I do at work. LOL

One of our cats, Anna, has been missing since Wednesday and I finally discovered her body yesterday. There was definitely some kind of 'spirit guidance' as to how I eventually found her. I was hanging out the washing and got this strange urge to go and look for her along the street perpendicular to ours that goes out towards the cliffs. Pete had
already searched along there a few times, as it's where he's been working on the boat. I just wandered in that direction, searching and calling and looking over the walls, with no sign of her. So I turned around to come back home, but then had another strong feeling just to go a bit further. The path I was following eventually dead-ended into a field of fruit trees and there was poor Anna lying under the nearest tree, badly decomposing. I found an old plastic bag nearby, wrapped her up and brought her home. We later buried her in our little 'cat cemetery'. Seems likely she died the first day she went missing. Just hope it was a seizure or something and she didn't suffer. I think it was a too odd and out of the way place for her to have been dumped there by someone though if she was attacked by a dog or run over. Not somewhere I've ever ventured before anyway and much further than I thought she wandered.

In my case it's literally true. And purposefully so on the part of the warehouse.
They had to change the retail program used in the stores they ship too because the program they were using had been dropped by the maker over 5 years before the store I work at was bought by the current owners. The Retail Systems people at AFI couldn't find a retail program that suited their needs so they went looking for something they could modify. They ended up choosing the warehouse inventory program that looked the least user-unfriendly and did a huge amount of modding on it. The result is very flexible and VERY touchy. You are working in the database itself. As a result there is no "Are you sure you want to do this?" When you press a button things happen right then.
By the time they got around to upgrading us they'd had a store manager delete her entire meat market and have to re-input all of the items by hand as she hadn't been doing the daily database backups they recommend. A week later she did the same to her produce department.
So, by the time they got around to us, the policy was "We only teach the scanning coordinator how to use this thing."
It really is very easy to screw things up big time. I've accidentally deleted two vendors. When I did the first one I just shrugged. That vendor had dropped the route we were on a couple of years before and we only had three of their products still on the shelf. I simply got those three products and put them back in under "undefined vendor" and was done. The second time it was a supplier we needed to keep in the system. I was sitting there thinking "Oh sh*t. I'm going to have to call AFI and have them pull up my last backu...... Wait, the menu the computer just ended on has an "undelete" option". Poke. 1400+ items reinstalled themselves and I've not repeated that goof that since then.

Thank you. We thought the same. She had a congenital spine and hip problem or at least one that developed when she was a kitten before she came to us; equivalent to a prolapsed disc. We tended to keep her confined to the house and courtyard as she wasn't very agile but she was very adventurous and took every opportunity to 'escape'. In hindsight, Pete said she was much more affectionate than normal on her last grooming session before she went off, almost as if she was saying goodbye.

Such a young beautiful kitteh girl, she was. My sincerest sympathies.

Mmm...inspiration, old school style. Always liked this artist, and it helped that he's done some serious covers for Peirs Anthony and Stephan King- I loved the series and the artwork on the covers caught my eye enough to remember them fifteen years or so later when I came across this site. :D

Thank you! Certainly true. The hardest to lose were our burmese cats whilst still in the UK. We'd had the oldest one for nearly 18 years. They are definitely like family.

I've known of Chris McGrath, and some of my favorite books have his covers. Michael Komarck is great, too. I could get lost on either site.

Komark & McGrath are new to me. I'm a big fan of the pre-Raphaelites, and McGrath has a lot of that sensibility in his illustrations.
