    Oh, piffle.

You know, the wine bottle is NOT an easy thing. It takes a lot of tries to get lathing a curve to work right! And in Hex, too. Really, one of the most eye-opening little projects is to make a cube that's 3x3x3, delete the middle of one of the faces so you have a hole. Do the same to the opposite face. Then subdivide it (which Hex does beautifully). The square hole becomes a circle!

Undo the subdivision. Now use Bridge to make the hole go all the way through properly. Bridge is a critical tool. So are extrude and bevel.

Then you learn that to keep the edges of the square from going mushy, you have to bevel them tightly.  Then you have a cube  with a hole in without using Booleans and it's ALL quads. This is very important stuff. Quads are easy to UVmap and they bend and stretch nicely in figures that are boned (clothing, people, etc.) And you learn that using subdivision gives you nice, smooth, perfect surfaces, so you don't have to manhandle everything into place.

These were some of my big Aha-s when I was starting out.

  • Also, the best free Hex tutorials are at Geekatplay.com.

If you don't mind paying a little, the EZbrush tutorials (he asks for a small donation) are invaluable. He does simple little projects, shoes you great ways to get very tidy results. And he has the most awful hillbilly  (or is it Kansas?) accent, which I just love.

If you want to learn to model clothing for Poser(Studio), run, do not walk, to Fugazi1968's tutorials on Rendo. It's not free, but it's very cheap. Start with his older ones and work forward. I'm an addict at this point. And it's his stuff that solved the clothing modeling problems for me!

Saville Row, here we come. You are one heck of a virtual tailor/cobbler, missus.

Question to those with infinite mote knowledge on matters dynamic: the one thing about the Slicer outfit that bugs me is the fact that you cannot put the hood back and make it look decent. Is it possible to just clothify the hood in poser and then choreograph it to go behind the wearer's head? Or do I select the material group, create a prop from it, clothify, constrain the shoulders and then choreograph? Any thoughts?
  • Absolutely fab work on those shorts, Doll- can't wait to put them to use!  Oo... and now boots?  *GRIN* Can't wait to see what you make next!!  Thank you very much, btw!

  • Nan - holy crap you are fast. I just gave you that photo! lol

Looking great. Should be fun to texture that too. Another challenge awaits!

Raet - I've often wondered the same thing. I know Whichway had some experience with this, but he's not around at the moment. Jim may know.

  • She's FLYIN' with those shorts, can't wait to see what she comes up with in the sense of boots. ;)
I have a question: There is this scene I want to work on, however the file is in .ma and .fbx format. Here is my issue: I have Carrara that I want to use with this. I need it in .obj format. I downloaded the trial version of Maya to play with (which surprisingly DIDN'T kill my 'puter when I installed it. So far.) However...I tried to convert it myself, but without the plug-in I cannot do the .obj file conversion.

I would like to get the Maya off my system since it is old, and using the program does kill resources that I need ot USE the program. My system is not made for Maya 2012. Is there someone here that has the capability to convert either the .ma or the .fbx file into an .obj file for me? I'd like to keep the texture/shaders so when I import it into Carrara I can shade/texture each piece as I see fit if possible.

This is for a lighting challenge on another forum, and I've been wanting to push myself in that area. This seems like a good one to try.
    Thanks in advance!

That would be how I'd do it. And in fact, is exactly how I DID do it with the fon-hood I used in my comic. However, I spawn a prop for the whole thing, so I can then export the result and re-import as a morph-target.

  • Hee. I've figured out how to change the .ma file to .obj file- you  had to turn it on in the plug-ins collection in the program itself.  :D  Now, to see if my computer WILL do it.  That is the question!

  • Must. Texture. These..... *drool*
  • Now I need figment-fashion advice. What will go with these boots?
    Suspiro ergo sum.
  • Heh. In all seriousness, dress pants, jeans, just about anything really.
  • Mmmyep. I can't picture any of my figments in skirts. Mmm...nope.

Jeans. Ah yes, I can see that... Now if my personal shopper would condescend to extend her skill to figments... but she's elitist that way.

  • I need to re-group them, there's something on the sole that's not blending right (that texture hides it), but that should be a small chore. (Says she confidently, hah hah.) There's a little morph I made to loosen the heel on the ankle, but that's about it. They fit pretty well.

Do you mean after the simulation? That's nifty. Btw I'm Surprised by how sensible I sounded when I wrote that. Now there is just the small matter of having to make the whole outfit a prop first before taking it apart, because at the moment it is not playing ball. Think it has something to do with the fact that the hood is part of 5 body groups.

  • Wow, Nan!  I like!  I know a few figs that would wear them and one possibly if forced. *Snirk*  I think they are flippin' awesome!

As for the conversion..  Yeah.  The .obj file, once it was exported, was missing half of the content once I imported it into carrara so it was a no go.  One of the mods from the other site stated that they tried the same conversion only to find half of the scene missing.  *Shrug* What can ya do?

I took Maya off the 'puter, it was trying to harf up ...something...in protest.  Now I just have to keep looking for all the files that were downloaded.  Seems Autodesk doesn't bother to put an uninstaller into their three and a half thousand dollar program so their customers.  *Twitch*  But- that's later on tonight.

    I needs meh coffeh.

  • "What? Why would you ever want to uninstall our products?"

I can just hear it. Har-har.

The re-group on the boots means I have to re-rig--but that wasn't that hard--and it means I get to fix that heel poke-through in the modeler before it even starts. So there's an upside. :)

I must say, as well, I had loads of fun working with those shorts last night. I was inspired by your Grumpy Elf with Scion's morphs to start a new character to put them in as well. *Grin* I'm waiting on another test render, but after all was said and done I'm almost pleased. I need to choose a new skin for him, however. The V4 skins I chose look wonderful, though the brows are......funky. Let's leave it at that. As soon as I'm finished tweaking and get him into a scene I'll post him. Unless people want the WIP's, which I can't really see. ;)

Tora is a big boy who even uses F4 morphs, so the point was, yes, this can fit him. His feet look small compared to the rest of him!

I did cop out a bit and solve some of the slight poke-thru issues by creating a hide/show feet set of poses, but as this is a set where you do not even see the feet or toes, I didn't think that was a wrong thing to do.

I'm going to do some materials for these and then you guys get to play with them. Hopefully today or tomorrow.

  • Last night I was jonesing to do some new mesh, so I started a pair of handcuffs, working from the real ones I have--that were part of a belt. They work and require a key, but I doubt they're police issue in any way, being more than thirty years old. They were part of a belt I used to wear!  Figments need hand-cuff belts. Figured I'd make and bone one lot, and then just make another lot to use as the fastening on a belt.

And Kay was all, "why are the handcuffs out? I'm too tired for that."

LOL!!! Usually when Mark spies those he either says something close to that or makes sure the phones are unhooked from the walls. :D That is too funny. Kay has her "adorbz" moments.

How did the mesh go? I like the idea of making them into the belt- but how difficult is it to actually model those?

  • Just to let you guys know, I will be packaging up those slicer textures as soon as my current commissions are done. The first one of the man in the slicer outfit has now been rendering away at 4000x4000 pixels and 300 dpi for about 36 hours and is roughly 2/3 backed. After that there's going to be the zdepth pass and an alpha mask, so hopefully by tomorrow night I can start post work on it while the second one is doing its thing on the other machine. Once that is done it'll be Red golden slicer textures for anybody ahoi!
  • Yay! *Grin*
